PLN ready to power data centres, starting with existing infrastructure

PLN chief Suroso Isnandar put data-centre power demand at 20 GW, on top of the 69.5 GW of generation in its RUPTL plan.

PT PLN (Persero) President Director Suroso Isnandar said the state utility fully supports meeting the electricity needs of data centres in Indonesia. He spoke at the Danantara Technology Innovation Investment Forum (DTIIF) 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.

Two phases

In the first phase, PLN serves data centres with existing infrastructure. In later phases, new infrastructure is built jointly, including power generation, transmission and distribution. Suroso also said data centres need non-subsidised business-to-business tariffs so that their costs do not burden subsidies.

Capacity figures

Under the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), PLN must add 69.5 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity over 10 years for the energy transition, excluding data-centre demand. Suroso put data-centre electricity demand at 20 GW.

At the same forum, Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia proposed Batam, Karimun and Bintan as new data-centre hubs. He warned that data centres need large amounts of electricity and water, so careful planning is needed to avoid straining local resources.
