CDC: 19 drug-resistant pathogens cause about 50,800 deaths a year in the US

The 2026 Antimicrobial Resistance Threats Report estimates about 9.7 million infections a year in the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its 2026 Antimicrobial Resistance Threats Report on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, local time. The CDC calls it its most comprehensive estimate to date of the impact of drug-resistant bacteria and fungi, plus Clostridioides difficile.

According to the report, 19 pathogens cause about 9.7 million infections and 50,800 deaths in the US each year. Four are classed as urgent threats, 13 as serious and two as watch threats. The urgent ones are Candida auris, carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales and drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

A fungus that is harder to treat

Drug-resistant Candida auris infections have risen tenfold since 2019, and some strains resist the available antifungal drug classes. CDC Director Erica Schwartz said antimicrobial resistance threatens modern medicine and puts millions of Americans at risk every year.
